Who is man?
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Genesis 2:7
The word formed in our opening scripture is from the Hebrew word 'yatsar' which means to squeeze into shape or to mould into form. So man's body was made from the dust of the ground.
After God made the body, He breathe or blew into his nostrils the breath of life. Life here is from the Hebrew word 'chay' which refers to life that animates. This life breathed into man by God activated the spirit of man, and he became a living soul.
From the above we can conclude that man is a spirit activated by the breath of life which gives life to the body made from the dust of the ground, and man has a soul (the seat of his mind, will and emotions).
I will like to remind you that on the 1st we learnt that physical death is the separation of the spirit and the soul from the body. So the true essence of man is in his spirit. Therefore man is a spirit, he has a soul and he lives in a body.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 distinguishes them clearly, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Confession.
I am a spirit, I have a soul and I live in a body. Jesus Christ is Lord over my spirit, soul and body. Jesus Christ is glorified in my spirit, soul and body, and my whole spirit and soul and body is preserved blameless unto the coming of my Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
For further study, read:
1 Thessalonians 3:11-13, 1 Corinthians 1:8,
Colossians 1:21-23.
Doing the Word
Glorify God with your spirit, soul and body.
