“And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;”
Our opening scripture admonishes us to renew our minds because the mind is the engine room of character. This is because your life will take on the character of your thoughts. The quality of your thinking is what determines the quality of your character. That is why if you think like a child, you will act like a child.
The Bible says in Proverbs 23:7, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: …” This is why John said in 3 John 1:2, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” Why did he say, even as thy soul prospereth? It is because my physical and financial prosperity is dependent on the condition of my soul. My soul refers to my mind, will and emotions. There are many people who are not sick physically but they are sick in their minds and as a result their body is affected. Medical science calls such a condition psychosoma; which is the influence of your mind on your body.
If you want to prosper mentally and be able to live righteously and holy then you must renew the attitude of your mind with the Word of God according to Ephesians 4:22-24 (NIV), “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Therefore, in order to live right consistently, you must be made new in the attitude of your mind.
