What is Love

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; …” 1 John 4:7(KJV)

In understanding the concept of love, our opening scripture proves to us that love has its origin in God. The Weymouth New Testament translation records 1 John 4:7 to show us that. It says, “Dear friends, let us love one another; for love has its origin in God,…”

Therefore as children of God, we have been born of love, so it is our nature to love. This is why the concluding part of 1 John 4:7 reads thus; “…every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.” In other words, we can say that love is the evidence of the new birth. So, do not struggle to love others, know that it is your nature to love. Also, it is important you know that, your love life is the proof of your intimacy with God.

Moving on in our understanding of love, the Bible says in 1 John 4:8, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” Notice that the Bible doesn't say that, God is loving. But rather he says, “God is love.”

Therefore, with this understanding of what love is, we can define love as the behaviourial expression of the life and nature of God.

PRAYER
Dear Father, I thank you because your love has been shared abroad in my heart by the Holy Spirit that lives in me. I ask that your love would continually dominate my heart and my actions, so that my life will daily be a source of hope and comfort to hurting humanity, in Jesus Name. Amen.
