The condition of the unbeliever.
“Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, …”
Acts 26:17-18a
Notice that one of the first things in Paul's mission statement as delivered by the Lord Jesus Christ to him is, “To open their eyes, …” This begins to reveal to us the condition of the man or woman that does not believe in Jesus Christ. If their eyes were open, Jesus would not say, “To open their eyes, …” So it is evident that the unbeliever is blind.
Jesus makes this clearer to us in John 3:3, “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” The unbeliever cannot see the kingdom of God because he is blind.
Since the blindness of the unbeliever is spiritual, he does not even know that he is blind, but his attitude to the Word of God reveals that blindness. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” The mind of the unbeliever is veiled. That is why they find it hard to understand the Word of God.
What is the remedy for the spiritual condition of the unbeliever? 2 Corinthians 3:16(AMP) says, “But whenever a person turns [in repentance] to the Lord, the veil is stripped off and taken away.” Therefore, the moment an unbeliever acknowledges his spiritual condition and turns to the Lord in repentance, the veil that blinded his mind is taken away so that he can receive the light of life.
Instruction.
