Are you loyal?

“Some friendships do not last, but some friends are more loyal than brothers.”
Proverbs 18:24(GNB)

Love is loyal even under fire or trial. This means that if you say you love someone, your willingness to stand by them in times of difficulty and challenging experiences even when they cannot meet your own needs, is a proof of your love for them.

A good example of such love found in the Bible, is the love that existed between David and Jonathan. The Bible says in 1 Samuel 18:1, “And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

Jonathan loved David, and he stayed true to his love for David, in his commitment to the preservation of David's life, even when King Saul, Jonathan's father wanted to kill David. Saul the King of Israel wanted David dead because he felt that the people of Israel would make David King after him, instead of his son Jonathan.

When Jonathan understood why his father wanted David dead, he still did not support his father who was supposedly trying to protect the throne for him, but instead, he sided with David, exposed his father's plot to David and arranged David's escape, because he loved David. (Read 1 Samuel 20:1-42)

Jonathan's love for David wasn't selfish, because as the heir apparent to the throne of Israel at that time, he was willing to step down, so that David would be King. That was true love that remained loyal even under fire.
(Read 1 Samuel 23:16-18)
